Program details
Wet your whistle the traditional way with a tasting session at the bright and brilliant Brettos bar, the oldest distillery in Athens in the heart of Plaka. With these two exclusive packages you can enjoy a sample of ouzo, mastika or raki with or without a snack. You can’t miss this hundred-year-old hideaway, because the walls are lined with a rainbow selection of colourful liqueurs. Many are still made to the secret family recipes passed down from Michael Brettos, who founded the company in 1909.
Nowadays, Brettos is a favourite hangout for people from all walks of life, who gather to chat quietly and sample spirits of every variety. From golden bergamot and grassy citron to delicate peach and rich cocoa, if you can make a liqueur from it, you’ll find it here! Then there’s the notorious anise-flavoured ouzo, and its cousin tsipouro, best enjoyed ice cold. Eminently drinkable until you try to stand up, they’re better sipped than swilled. Or try a snifter of brandy, carefully laid down in huge wooden barrels to age for longer than anyone cares to remember.
It’s not just Greek drinks you’ll find at Brettos. Under the iconic metal sign you’ll also discover spirits from all over the world. An ideal spot for a quiet night out or a friendly nightcap before bed, it’s clear that there’s something very special about Brettos, and a visit there feels like a return to a quieter and more elegant era. With so many delicious drinks to choose from you’ll want to revisit those good old days again and again.
Start/opening time: 10am daily.
End/closing time: Midnight.
