Hop in your handy time machine and travel back 25 centuries to dine at a restaurant with a difference: it only serves ancient Greek cuisine. The Archeon Gefseis, or ‘Ancient Flavour’ restaurant is a true world first and has garnered a huge amount of well-deserved attention in the international media. Pontificate over philosophy, debate democracy or hold your own symposium in this authentic environment surrounded by classical statues, frescos and torches.
Your waiter, attired in a flowing red robe, will lead you to your table where you can sip wine from an earthenware cup and choose your dishes for the evening. Of course, America hasn’t been discovered yet so there’s no potatoes, tomatoes or rice, ruling out many modern Greek dishes. And there are no forks – only Poseidon is allowed one of those. Thankfully the ancients were just as good at cooking as they were at everything else. Stuffed calamari, succulent smoked pork and tender chicken are all on the menu, along with pork pancetta with a honey and thyme dressing. All the salads involve plants that Socrates would have eaten, including silphium, a variety of fennel whose leaves grace ancient coins. Without our 21st century sugar obsession, sweetness comes in healthier and more exciting forms: ruby red pomegranate seeds, juicy figs and sticky honey. Luckily for us, the wine still flows plentifully – as does the conversation.

Starters: smoked fish slices with lentils
main dish : tefthis - kalamari stuffed with cheese and Greek herbs
Dessert: pantanamicta: assortments of dry nuts plums, figs, almonds, dates, hazelnuts with Athenian honey, with or without yogurt
