Program details

Travel to the ‘the navel’ of the ancient Greek world, with this two-day trip to the Unesco World Heritage Site of Delphi. It’s a magical place for many visitors, who report being deeply spiritually moved at the site. Ancient engravings in the stone such as 'Know Thyself' and 'Nothing in Excess' stand as a lesson for future generations. Famed for the uncanny accuracy of its resident fortune-telling priestess, the Sibyl, Delphi attracted travellers seeking their fortunes from all over the ancient world.

From Athens we’ll cross the fertile plain of Boeotia to the slopes of Mount Parnassus. We’ll visit the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo Pythios, and learn the story of how he defeated the dragon that guarded the sacred omphalos stone, source of the site’s powers. Visit the marble Treasury of the Athenians, built to store the offerings of grateful kings. See the stadium where the ancient Pythian Games, precursors to our modern Olympics, were lost or won. Then explore the on-site museums where you can see the omphalos stone itself, as well as other ancient masterpieces such as the bronze Charioteer. In the afternoon you’re free to explore the site further. There’s time to enjoy a traditional dinner, before you retire to your hotel.

The next morning is free for you to explore more of the ancient grandeur and mystic atmosphere of Delphi. On the way home we’ll pass through the ancient town of Thebes, and discover the story of King Oedipus, whose terrible fate was foreseen by the oracle. We’ll continue through mountainous Livadeia and pretty Arachova before returning to Athens.
