Program details
This excursion is designed to honour the rich and creative Jewish heritage of Thessaloniki. From 1492 to 1912, the Jewish community was the largest of all ethnic groups living in the city. The thriving section of the population set the tone of Thessaloniki, and this is why the city was widely referred to as the Jerusalem of the Balkans.
Despite a devastating fire towards the end of World War I, which destroyed many of the Jewish monuments, and the almost total annihilation of the Jewish community during the German occupation in World War II, a number of landmarks remain. Walk around the city centre with your personal professional guide, who has deep knowledge of the history and the present of the Jews. You will pay tribute to a once vivid and thriving community and get told the story hidden behind. Visit the Venizelou, Ladadika, Holocaust Memorial, Jewish Museum, Modiano Market, Yad L’zichron Synagogue, Louloudadika (Yahudin Hamami) and other sites associated with the never-to-be-forgotten Sephardim.
Meeting point: Your hotel.
Times: Monday to Saturday starts at 9:30am. Alternative start time can be arranged upon request. Tour lasts four hours.
Language: Available in English.
