Join us on a colourful journey into the history, lifestyle and unique character of one of the most interesting communities in Singapore. The Peranakan people are the descendants of Chinese migrants who came to Singapore centuries ago and have maintained and developed a rich, separate culture. Visit their districts and soak in the sights, sounds and aromas of their traditions on the popular Peranakan trail.
Take a walk through the Spice Garden which sits on the original site of the first Botanic Gardens and uncover the intricacies of spices and herbs that go into Peranakan cooking. A fascinating display of traditional Peranakan outfits, embroidery, beadwork, jewellery, porcelain, furniture and craftwork provides an insight into the captivating culture of the Peranakans. Wander through the bustling enclaves of Katong and Joo Chiat that showcase the intricate, baroque Peranakan architecture and maybe pause along the way to meet some Babas (Peranakan men) and Nonyas (Peranakan women).
Admire rows of colourful shop houses with wrought iron balconies and porticos, many of them dating back a century or more. Visit the Peranakan museum and learn more about this community with exhibits of old photos providing a detailed chronicle of the community. A sampling of traditional Nonya delicacies is the perfect way to complete the trail and the fish head Assam curry is among the most famous and delicious of staples on the Peranakan menu.
