Soak up Florida’s vast natural beauty. This is the ideal tour for nature lovers or those who are ready for a break from the make-believe worlds of theme parks. See Central Florida’s bounty of creatures great and small in untouched natural surroundings and understand why this area is dubbed “Nature Coast”.
Bright and early, we’ll head to the picturesque Crystal River, home to many Florida manatees. Also known as sea cows, these manatees of the West Indian species migrate here when the water temperature drops in the Gulf of Mexico. On a relaxing boat ride, check out these gentle giants that weigh as much as 1,300 pounds and sport paddle-like flippers. Plunge into the river’s warm, spring-fed waters for a swim or to snorkel. Paddleboards and kayaks are available so you can get up close and personal with the manatees! If you’re lucky, one of these endangered manatees might join you on your dip.
We’ll enjoy lunch in the fresh air. Fantastic scenery along with good grub will prepare us for the second part of our adventure. We will hop aboard an airboat that will cruise along the Homosassa River. During the fully narrated, exhilarating ride, we will have the chance to see a marine park worth of animals: dolphins, turtles, armadillos, river otters, and alligators
More surprises await you at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. From a floating observatory, see the manatees in their natural habitat. The park is a rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned manatees. Once treated, they are returned to the wild. Stroll along elevated boardwalks and into the habitats of the park’s plethora of wildlife. Black bears, white-tailed deer, wolves and whooping cranes call the park home. You might even get a celeb sighting: a hippopotamus named Lu who has starred in a few films. The real Florida will astound you and your family.
