Program details

The capital of Laos, Vientiane is assembled from a collection of villages centred on Buddhist temples. Visit Wat Sisaket, the only temple in Vientiane to escape the total destruction wreaked on the city by a Siamese army in 1828. The Ho Trai hall contains 6840 Buddha images. Opposite is Wat Prakeo. The Emerald Buddha that now resides in Bangkok was once housed here, just one stop on its travels from Northern Thailand. Unlike other temples, Wat Prakeo has never had monks in residence. Continue to That Luang, the holy of holies for Lao Buddhists. The great golden spire serves as a symbol for the country. Originally erected in 1566, it has been remodelled during the 20th century. A photo stop is made at the Patouxai, or Victory Gate, constructed in 1958 from material supposedly intended for the runway of the airport. Finish off with a visit of a weaving village.
