Begin by walking by some of London’s most famous sites, such as 10 Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. The last stop is the intriguing Cenotaph, originally a memorial for the First World War and now the UK’s main war memorial. You will even set eyes upon some iconic statues: that of Sir Winston Churchill and that of the women of WWII.
Westminster was one of the most affected areas during the bombings of WWII, and with good reason: it was home to the undercover and underground base of a complicated secret world of governments in exile, overseas forces, spies and counterspies. Here was located the bunker in which Winston Churchill and his government hid during the blitz of London. Delve into the Churchill War Museum and the war rooms to learn all about London’s darkest hour.
As you descend into the wartime bunker of the Churchill War Rooms, you will feel as if you are walking into the past. Feel as if you are reliving the terrifying moments politicians lived while they planned and plotted about the future of Europe in these claustrophobic rooms.
Here, your guide will salute you as your experience concludes with an audio guide tour of the War Rooms, preserved exactly as they were left the day the lights were switched off in 1945! Here, the thick walls teem with history. This was the
nerve centre of Prime Minister Churchill’s war efforts, where he and the British cabinet planned and prepared the defeat of Hitler.
As you go deeper into the labyrinth of rooms, you’ll discover how life and work continued underground, from top-secret conversations between Churchill and President Roosevelt in the Transatlantic Telephone Room to simple domestic concerns in Churchill’s kitchen. Wander for as long as you like before making your way out in your own time.
Meeting/pick-up point: Westminster Tube Station Exit 2 Victoria Embankment and then take the stairs up to street level to Victoria Embankment. The group will be meeting at the top of the stairs behind the statue of Boadicea on a chariot.
