Situated 6 metres (20ft) under the heaving streets, the network of walkways links 95 Downtown blocks over a combined distance of 11km (7 miles) and boasts a series of eye-catching architectural gems. Other highlights include a Houston history lesson, a Dutch-style lunch and time for shopping and during this impressive tunnel vision.

Start your subterranean adventure above ground at the Chase Bank Building, which features eight frescoes depicting Texas history. Head down and then up to the Chase Tower, the tallest building in Texas. Back to ground level and across the street to Pennzoil Place. Take the lift back down to the Tunnel and walk underground to One Shell Square.

Head back up again to street level and take a stroll in Hermann Square Park towards City Hall, where you will watch a short video about Houston, pose for a photo and learn more about the city from where America plotted its conquest of the moon. Then head back down again to the tunnels for a bite to eat from one of the food vendors and then finish this zigzagging tour with a walk through the newest tunnel towards the city’s theatre district, the Downtown Historic District and MetroRail, the futuristic tram system.
